Erasmus, 1520

Erasmus, Desiderius. Adagiorum chiliades quatuor, centuriaeque totidem. Quibus etiam quinta additur imperfecta. Venice: Aldine Press, September 1520.

Folio (320 x 210mm). 330 leaves. Collation: A-B8 C10; a-z aa-pp8. Printed in Roman and Greek types. Aldine woodcut device on title-page and final printed leaf.

Early mottled calf, with gilt tooling in compartments on the spine (six raised bands), incorporating an intertwined P and S, and a gilt pattern on the board edges. Marbled endleaves and page edges. Corners a bit bumped, external hinges a bit rubbed with some flaking and the upper hinge starting a bit. Early marginal notes throughout, many trimmed by an earlier binder. Some scattered foxing, marginal dampstain affecting leaves 141-144 (not affecting text).

With the ownership inscription of Jean Grolier on the final text leaf, "Jo. Grolierii Lugdenen et amicorum." Grolier was known to have owned at least two copies of this edition of the Adagiorum, one other in a Picard binding.

From its initial publication in 1500, Erasmus’ Adages went through numerous editions, as he regularly and substantially added to them up until his death in 1536. Renouard, 89.2; Palau, 55; Naiditch et al 187. Provenance: Herman and Aveve Cohen, Chiswick Book Shop.
